Saint Mary Mokena is bringing back its Oktoberfest weekend celebration on September 14-15.
Saturday will consist of the traditional evening celebration from 6:00 pm until 11:30 pm on the parish grounds at 115thAvenue & 195th Street, while Sunday will feature “Kinderfest” – a family-friendly event also on parish grounds, from noon to 3:00 pm.
At the Saturday Oktoberfest, traditional German food will be served, including bratwurst (grilled on-site), schnitzel, stroganoff and apple strudel, along with German beer. Live entertainment will be provided by two German cover bands: Phenix and The Bratwurst Brothers. A Polka dance lesson will be taught by Danse Integro in between the band performances.
Advance tickets cost $30 each and cover food, entertainment and non-alcoholic beverages. They can be purchased at the parish office or online until 4:00 pm on Friday, September 13th. They can also be purchased at the event itself for $35 each. This will be a 21 and over event.
The Sunday Kinderfest is designed for children and families. It will include a wide variety of activities including crafts and games, a rootbeer garden, entertainment by Mr. D’s Magic Show and goodie bags for the first 300 children. Admission is paid at the event: $5 for adults, $3 for children, 3 and under are free.
“There’s no better way to kick off the fall season than with music, dancing and delicious German food, enjoyed in the company of friends and family,” says Jeannine Skarbek-Kubas, event organizer. “We invite everyone in the community to come out and join in on the fun and fellowship. This event is not just for St. Mary parishioners.”
Now in its sixth year, Saint Mary Oktoberfest is the parish’s flagship community and fundraising event. Hundreds of people attend each year. A portion of proceeds will be donated to FISH, a local, community-based “helping hand” available to persons in situations of need.
