Music for the Glory of God: Meet St. Mary Parish’s Talented New Music Director

St. Mary Mokena has a fresh face behind the organ. Joseph Berardi was recently named the parish’s new Director of Sacred Music. He brings a wealth of liturgical music experience to St. Mary, along with deep knowledge and passion for the Catholic faith and tradition.

We sat down with Joseph to get to know him a little bit better.

What is your musical and professional background?

I come from a musical family. I began playing the piano when I was five years old, and I’ve been involved with liturgical music for the past eight years. Growing up, my two brothers and I were homeschooled, which allowed us a flexible schedule to play music at various churches. Today, one of my brothers and my dad are also music directors at different parishes.

Why did you get involved with liturgical music?

I always had a higher appreciation for organ and church music. There is something special about enhancing the liturgy with my music to help the congregation worship. Secular music artists perform their music for the glorification of themselves. I provide music for the glorification of God. I want the focus to be on Him.

What is the role of music in the Liturgy?

Music allows us to raise our hearts to God and focus on the Mass. It helps connect the congregation to Him in a unique way and prevents people from getting distracted by other things. I remember that at my Confirmation there was no music, and I had trouble getting into the right mindset to be confirmed. That helped drive home the importance of liturgical music for me. There’s such an absence without it.

What is the role of the congregation when it comes to music?

I think it’s essential for the congregation to participate. It shows that they’re happy to be in church. As St. Augustine said, “To sing is to pray twice,” and I really believe that. For that reason, I’m going to include a healthy amount of congregational hymns.

What are your favorite Liturgical pieces to play?

  • Favorite Congregational Hymn: “Holy God We Praise Thy Name”
  • Favorite Choir Piece: “Ave Verum” by Mozart
  • Favorite Organ Piece: I love playing “Toccata from Widor’s Symphony No. 5” for big feast days. I play it as an organ postlude, and people always hang around after Mass ends to listen to it.

What is your musical vision for St. Mary?

My musical vision is to continue to raise awareness of the Eucharistic Revival happening across the nation. As the Director of Sacred Music, I plan for our parish to be singing more songs centered on the Eucharist, like the “Ave Verum” and “Anima Christi.” I want people to get inspired to raise awareness of the Eucharist and live out their faith in the world.

What are your plans for the choirs?

I’m going to keep the choirs as they are. I will try recruiting younger voices to fight the stereotype that only older people sing at church. To do this, I will try to keep the music simple and reduce the time commitment, so younger people with work and family responsibilities can still join. I’m welcoming anyone who wants to sing for the glorification of God. I know we have the talent in the pews because I hear them sing on Sunday. I will be holding a meet and greet for anyone looking to join our choirs and will encourage previous members to return.

How have your first couple of weeks been at St. Mary?

Everyone has been extremely welcoming, and I can say that’s not always the case at every parish. A lot of people have come up to introduce themselves and meet me. I feel very supported and look forward to getting to know everyone!

Is there anything you want to share about your personal life and hobbies?

I grew up in Tinley Park and now live in New Lenox. I enjoy walks outside, reading self-improvement and scriptural books, and trying new recipes. Specifically, I enjoy making bread. It’s time-consuming but rewarding!

What is your favorite faith activity?

I like participating in Catholic young adult groups, attending Bible studies, and going to retreats when my schedule allows. I like praying novenas and have a big devotion to the saints.

Stop by after any weekend Mass to meet Joseph!
